Amritsar,
the holy city of the Sikhs, was founded in 1577 by Ram Das, the fourth
Guru of the Sikhs. The name Amritsar translates as ' pool of nectar' and
the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion, the Golden Temple, is located
in the centre of the city. The original copy of the holy book, the Granth
Sahib, is kept at this temple and occasionally taken out on procession.
Excursions include the Govindgarh fort, built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh
in 1809; the temple of Taran Taran, another important centre of the Sikhs
and predates the Golden Temple; Dharamshala,
a scenic hill station in the Dhauladhar range and currently the seat of
Dalai Lama.
