The
second largest city in Rajasthan, Jodhpur stands at the edge of the Thar
desert. The city is totally dominated by the massive fort topping a sheer
rocky hill which rises in the middle of the town. The Meharangarh fort
sprawled across the 125 m high hill is the most impressive and formidable
fort in Rajasthan. Other tourist attractions include Jaswanthwada; Umaid
Bhawan Palace, an immense palace also known as the Chittar palace because
of the Chittar sandstone; the clock tower. The city is well known for
its textiles, silver and handicraft. Excursions include Mandore, known
for its 'hall of heroes' containing 15 figures carved out of rockwall;
Osian a desert town which was an important trading centre between the
8th and 12th centuries.
