Wildlife Sanctuaries

India has an extremely rich and varied wildlife, and even the casual traveller will find it very rewarding to be able to put names to the common animals, birds and plants which abound. The various jungle and forest types form an important habitat, but are not by any means the only important habitats in India. Varied cultivation, including irrigated agriculture, town and villages, the vast stretch of the Ganga plain, the humid coastal areas and the dry deserts of the northwest all have their own special wildlife.

Because of this great variety of habitat in India, do not expect a species which is common in one area to be necessarily common all over the sub-continent. Birds, animals and indeed plants are very specific as to the environment in which they flourish, and this applies not only to rainfall and vegetation, but also to altitude, and the highlands have their special wildlife too.

India, currently, has around 80 National Parks and 441 Sanctuaries dotted around the country. While some are inaccessible, many have excellent facilities for visitors. Depending on the area and terrain, wildlife watching provides its own excitement. It may be done from elephant - back, from watch towers and even a boat - and the thrill of spotting herd of wild elephants, deers, a rhino or even a tiger, in its natural environment, is very difficult to match.
